We design the next generation laboratory otherwise known as COT LAB CENTER. We have conquered short term instructional courses, and now we are ready to look beyond it. This step is a difficult one, since higher level technology has been designed for research, not for classroom use. In addition, we want to make this laboratory accessible to as wide a range of instructors and students as possible. We especially want to include those that normally are precluded from state-of-the-art research. In order to accomplish these complex goals, we have designed an approach to combine the development of the hardware, software, and curriculum.
Project-based learning can be an effective learning method. In a pilot program that compared a project based introductory programming course to a traditionally lectured course via a survey, most of the students felt they were engaged in meaningful learning. They also found that the course developed several skills, including problem solving, group work, software development, report writing, skills in testing of programs.
